This spring 4x4 street football tournaments are organized in some 30 cities across the Netherlands. The winners qualify for the KNVB Straatvoetbal Games, on June 25 in Rotterdam.
Street football is at the basis of football. Almost all of the former and current stars started playing at a young age on streets and squares before moving to a club. From Johan Cruyff and Lionel Messi to Ruud Gullit and Christiano Ronaldo grew up playing football on the street all day long.
Abdelhak Nouri, nicknamed the King of Geuzenveld, is the youngest star who learned his skills on the streets of Amsterdam. The 19-year-old Ajax midfielder played thousands of hours at the Nigel de Jong plein in Geuzenveld. Nowadays the square is known by many as the A. Nouri-plein.
Stimulating kids to go out on the streets and play football, is one of the main ambitions of the KNVB. All sorts of activities are organized to increase the fun and excitement in football among youth. Street football helps children becoming stronger and better in football. Moreover it teaches them values like friendship, team spirit and ambition.
