From 5 to 9 July 2017, Amsterdam is the stage of the second edition of the Urban Sports Week Amsterdam (USWA). At locations spread across the capital, a large number of events take place, ranging from competitions and championships to demos and clinics in a wide range of urban sports.
One of the main events at Museum Square is the USWA Amsterdam Open Skateboard Contest. A temporary skate ramp is being built on the pond in front of Rijksmuseum. Sixty skateboarders come into action in the disciplines street, best trick and highest ollie. There are men and women competitions.
The street contest begins with preliminary rounds where all contestants put down two runs of 45 seconds, with the score of the best run counting. In the semi-finals and finals, participants will have an introduction run and a jam.
The Dutch Skateboard Federation (SFN) is organising the competition. Bram Waterman, president SFN, is excited about the integration of the USWA Amsterdam Open Skateboard Contest in the Urban Sports Week Amsterdam: "We see this collaboration as a wonderful opportunity to introduce skateboarding in the right way to the general public. We intend to grow this event in the future to a World Cup series and eventually even to a World Championships. Skateboarding will be an Olympic sport in Tokyo in 2020. As a federation we are preparing ourselves for this. Coach Sjoerd Vlemmings will ensure that the International Skateboarding Board is present at USWA. The Dutch selection will of course be included. "
The organization of USWA also welcomes the arrival of international skateboarders to Amsterdam. "For the Urban Sports Week Amsterdam it's great that athletes from abroad are participating in various sports. That gives the event an extra dimension, "said Marnix Drysdale on behalf of TIG Sports. "That skateboarding becomes Olympic, gives a great boost to the sport. We gladly contribute to the preparation of the Games by facilitating international competitions. For example, the Dutch Summit can measure in its own country with top overseas players."
